Due to its excellent control and smooth trigger The 1911 pistol has proven to be a favourite among competitors for years. The Springfield Armory Prodigy DS takes the traditional pistol and adds modern amenities which makes it a great choice for shooters looking to get an extremely powerful 1911, but don’t have the money for a custom-shop built.
The frame made of forged steel has a smooth action and an open top which can be tapped for an optics mount. The grip made of polymer is attached to the forged frame, and can be used for 15 and 17 rounds of 9mm rounds (the five” Prodigy has two 10-round magazines to satisfy the limitations on magazines in certain states). The cuts on the front of the slide are designed to vent gases upward, which reduces muzzle rise, and also helps shooters recover quickly to see the sight in the event of follow-up shots.
Springfield Armory has designed this slide to fit the many different red dot optics available. This lets you mount your favorite optic at the exact same place on the weapon, as the factory iron sights. The slide has been milled to fit the popular Agency Arms plate, which fits several of the most well-known optic footprints. Springfield offers a rounded cover plate that allows you to co-witness the Prodigy with the factory-mounted Hex Dragonfly red-dot sight.
The Prodigy does not attempt to be a universal weapon. The Prodigy is equipped with an ambidextrous safe and a dust cover made of Picatinny Rail. The gun also features a double stack grip, the full length magazine well as funnels to hold magazines.
The Prodigy worked well and handled well during my shooting test. It was simple to maintain lubrication and suffered from very little recoil. This is the case especially when using match loads of high-end quality. It grouped well and fired precisely with the sights simple to align. I was also impressed by the molded-in tipping on the grip, as well as the squared trigger guard which makes it easier to operate the controls using gloves.
I’d have preferred to have seen a less slender grip from front to back on the pistol making it easier for one person to shoot as well as a more secure guide rod design, one that doesn’t lose its grip as quickly. It’s a great handgun it can also be the foundation for a custom build or a CCW at any time.
